Vita Mix versus BlendTec
It was really at a toss up between the Vita Mix and Blendtec. I had done a lot of research online and was 99% sure I was going to get the Blendtec, until I came across the type of plastic the jar is made of. Vita Mix's 5200 has a container that is safe and doesn't leach. I was really concerned though that I would miss the automatic blending that happens with the Blendtecs preprogrammed controls. Luckily Costco was having a demo of the new 5200 so when I went, I actually liked the container a whole lot. The handles and the lid were cushioned and very ergonomic. It looked like a high quality appliance and since my background is design, it matters to me just a bit. ;-) When I brought it home, the programmable buttons on Blendtec were no longer a concern as it seems that not everything will blend just right if you don't have the proper proportions of liquid, vs, solids, etc. So doing it with the Vita Mix actually gives you more control, at least this is what I have experienced. What I also liked about the Vita Mix was the recipe book that came with it. Most of the recipes are very healthy, where as when I went to the Blendtec website looking for recipes, the ice creams recipes in particular used things like non-dairy creamer which was a turn off for me. If I'm getting a high powered blender to be healthy, I want to learn how to make healthy treats. So, I have been VERY pleased with my Vita Mix and have been using it EVERY DAY!

I bought the Vitamix 5200 at Costco and used it for 2wks making whole fruit juices in the a.m and whole veggie juices in the p.m and delicious sorbets & frozen yogurts at night. Yesterday I bought the blendtec from another Costco and as soon as I got home I put in a cup of nonfat yogurt and a few cups of frozen strawberrys and it would'nt draw them down on any setting. I tried opening the lid and pushing down with a spatula but it wouldn't work. I dumped the contents into my Vitamix and with a little pressure with the tamper I made my frozen yogurt it 60 seconds. The flexibility of the Vitamix is that you can create foods without a lot of liquid to get the texture you want. That is very important to me. The in store demos always use hi sugar concentrated juices as the liquid to get the blender to work. I like frozen fruits with just enough yogurt or soy milk to slightly cream it in a healthy way.
Love my Vitamix but it was indeed a toss up. Blendtec now has the same plastic as Vita-mix.
This Vitamix versus Blendtec Review helped me decide.
vitamix does demonstrations with non dairy creamer, veggies, greens and fruit for 'icecream' Uh... non dairy creamer?...oh yea... you mean HYDROGENATED OILS AND SUGAR! yea..that's healthy!
I did the same research and ended up buying the Blendtec. I love it! I do not use the non-dairy creamers, etc. but rather Greek, non-sweetened yogurt and love my results! It is true, as one commenter stated, that the plastic in the container is now non-toxic, also. Seems there is not a lot of variation in the blenders. Some people just prefer one over the other but I think they are both super great! LOVE the power after having TWO expensive Williams and Sonoma Warings that did not blend well, or last long!!
